Learn Your Body Type
You you want to know how to find your body shape? I have been asked many times to put together a guide on how to identify your body shape. You can check out the best dresses for an hourglass, the most flattering clothes for an apple shape, and the best jeans for your body shape over on the blog. However, first you need to calculate what your body shape is.
Calculate My Body Shape
To work out your body shape, either look in the mirror and check out the body shape characteristics below, or calculate your body shape using a tape measure.
It is important to measure yourself correctly if you are using a tape measure because otherwise the results can be wrong. Use the guidelines below to measure each part of your body correctly. Make sure you do not twist the tape.
- Shoulders – Place the tape on top of the shoulders and measure across the back from one should er drop to the other across just below the base of the neck.
- Chest / bust – Place the tape about two inches below your armpits. Make sure the measurement takes in the fullest part.
- Waist – To measure your waist place the tape around where you would wear a belt. This is usually the slimmest part of your torso about an inch above your belly button.
- Hips – Measure at the widest part of your hips and take in the fullest part of your bottom.
- Inner Leg – Measure from the inside of your crotch down the inseam to your ankle.

Calculate Your Body Shape
To know how to find your body shape it is best to measure yourself as well as to look in a full-length mirror. I have worked with many clients who are sure they are one shape to only discover that they are something entirely different. I alway use both methods to determine shape. Often people can find themselves in between two shapes. If that is you, be honest with yourself and choose the one you think you are closest to. Certain styles and suitability cross over into different body shapes so you will definitely notice a positive change. Check out the How To Dress Your Body Type section on the blog to learn how to find your body shape and for further advice on what styles will suit you and which to avoid.
