Choosing The Essentials
So you want to know the 10 things I will not be buying in 2022? You have come to the right place. When building a capsule wardrobe you want to choose timeless classics that will not date easily. The clothes need to complement both the colours and the styles of your current collection, fit you well and work for your lifestyle. Anything that does not fit should not be included. However, there are some items I will not include in my capsule. Some of the options below may suit you depending on your size, lifestyle and personal preferences. Check out the latest capsule wardrobe checklist for 2022 for inspiration on what you could consider.
Oversized
There is a huge trend as I write this for oversized shirts, trousers and jackets. I am going to avoid this trend for two reasons;
- I am 5’4 so anything huge and baggy will drown me.
- I know it will date quickly.
Now if it is a trend that works for you go for it. However, if you are looking to build a long-term capsule wardrobe I would suggest that you avoid significant trends. Particularly the neon oversized offerings, as within 18 months, they will look outdated. If you are petite, you definitely want to avoid this trend. Learn what petite styles will best suit you if you are just starting out or a petite over 40.
Quality Over Labels
There is no problem in owning designer labels as the quality tends to be better. I own several. But, I will not be buying a designer label for the sake of owning a designer label. If I purchase anything in this category it will be the quality I will be choosing rather than a display of the brand name.
Bargains I never Use
Now, this is an important one,
repeat after me…
A bargain is only a bargain if you use it. Otherwise, it is a waste of your hard-earned cash WHATEVER it cost.
Does that make sense? When the sales arrive it is easy to get tempted by something just because you want to own something you can not usually afford. However, if you do not use it, because that is the ONLY reason you bought it, it is a waste of money. So I will not be buying any bargain however good it is if I will not use it.
Boxy Dresses
Much like the oversized choices, a boxy dress does not work for me. To be honest it does not work for many other people either. Something that hangs straight off your shoulders and drops straight down takes away any shape you might have, it also usually makes you look bigger than you are. As I am petite (ish) and I have a bust this style does not work for me so I will not be investing in a boxy dress any time soon.
Fast Fashion
I would say this is one of the most important ones on this list. If all the fires and floods over the last few years have not made you stop and think then something should. The planet can not cope with the throwaway fashion culture anymore. Years ago, our grandparents were careful about what they bought and made a garment last. Now, a fashion can be out again three months later. If you are or know a teenager who loves fashion but wants to be more conscious about what they buy, get capsule wardrobe tips for a teenager.
This is not about budgeting. I know what it is like to be on a budget. It is just about making choices as and where you can that reduce your environmental impact. A company that does not care about the environmental impact of their brand will likely not care about the quality either.
Mend. Buy Preloved. Choose Well.
I will be thinking very carefully about what I add to my wardrobe and will be doing my best to avoid fast fashion.
The Wrong Size
Now this one might appear obvious. However, you would be surprised at the many man and women who I work with who buy clothes or shoes in the wrong size. There are several reasons they might do this;
They do not know their true size
They want to lose or gain weight so they buy clothes in their target size.
They found a really good bargain and can not resist even though it is uncomfortable to wear.
Whatever the reason buying something in the wrong size is not a good idea. The only time it might be ok is if you know your body will be changing rapidly for a legitimate reason. For example, you are training hard for your target weight, you have just had a baby or surgery.
As I do not fall into a relevant category I will not be buying anything that is not in my size in 2022.
More than I need
When I work closely with private clients, we talk a lot about their lifestyles and needs. Most of us have more clothes than we need and lots we hardly ever wear. Whenever you go to buy anything, it is worth double checking you do not own something similar already. I will not be buying more than I need.
The Incorrect Colour
This category is also down to the individual. When I work with clients we usually choose around eight colours for them to start to build a capsule wardrobe. A colour analysis works really well as you can learn which colours suit you before you start. For advice on colour and how I can help book a FREE consultation with me. So in 2022, I will not be buying anything in a colour that will not aline with the rest of my wardrobe.
The Incorrect Style
This one is similar to the last. Identifying your style and what works for you is a huge part of creating a capsule wardrobe that works. A body Shape Style Guide can also help you to learn which styles will enhance your best features and which ones to avoid. Again, if you need help book a FREE consultation.
Alongside this, it is also very important to only include styles that you love and work with your lifestyle. For that reason, I will not be buying anything that does not fit with the current styles in my wardrobe.
The Opinion Of Others
When building a capsule wardrobe it is worth seeking professional help (if you need it), but do not allow outside influences to determine what you like and dislike.
Companies will try to tell you are about of fashion to sell you more goods.
Some might even suggest your lifestyle or mental health will improve if you own this item.
It won’t.
What will help you feel confident and help you find your happy place is identifying who YOU are, what YOU love, what works for YOU and how something makes YOU feel.
For this reason, I will not be buying anything based solely on the opinions of others.
So there you have it, 10 things I will not be buying in 2022. Do you have anything you would add to this list?
