Even if you have the most concise wardrobe, it is still worth updating it now and again. With the best intentions, a collection of clothes can become stale for a multitude of reasons. It could be that you set up a capsule wardrobe (a small collection of clothes that fit you and your lifestyle) convinced you knew what you needed. Or maybe, your job has started or ended. A number of situations can alter what you need. It could simply be that some items are a little worn now, so you need to update your capsule wardrobe. Whatever the reason, you have come to the right place. Below I have a series of questions to ask yourself when you look at your wardrobe to assess whether it is working for you and your lifestyle.
Refresh Your Wardrobe
The first two things to look at are style and colour. If you have already gone through the process of creating a capsule wardrobe, then you have likely decided on colours and styles that suit you. You might need a boost on how to create a capsule wardrobe to get you started.
What can happen a few months down the line is that other items start to creep in. Maybe you were on holiday or out with friends and went into a fancy little boutique and picked something up on impulse and that item now hangs in your wardrobe like a red flag.
Go back through all your clothes and ask yourself if the item is in a colour that still fits with the rest of your wardrobe. Also, ask yourself if the styles fit you well and go with the rest of your wardrobe.
Wardrobe Checklist
Once you have looked at colour and style, update your wardrobe with a checklist of questions to go through. Some might include;
- Is it damaged?
- Is it so worn it needs replacing?
- Does it still fit my lifestyle?
- Is my lifestyle the same as what it was when I created my capsule wardrobe?
- Does it still fit well?
- Does it feel comfortable?
- When you wear it, do you have to continually adjust it?
- Is the material pleasant to wear?
- Do I want to change or update my style?
When To Makeover Your Wardrobe
There is no right or wrong time to check and possibly update your wardrobe, though at least once a year is advised. Especially if you spent ages going through your clothes in the past to create a capsule wardrobe, you do not want it to creep back up to what it was!
A new year or a new season is a great time to reassess. Particularly if you are replacing one season’s wardrobe with another, you can look at the collection of clothes with fresh eyes before you put them back into your wardrobe.
Sometimes an event can prompt you to adjust it. For example, needing new outfits for a new job. Whatever the reason, keep on top of it and regularly check in.
How To Plan A Wardrobe
Alternatively, If you are starting from scratch, you might benefit from learning how to build a capsule wardrobe. There are lots of things to consider when you first begin like lifestyle, where you spend your time, the environment and weather, your personal taste, the season and how it fits.
Once you start the bare bones of a capsule, you can add to it with intentional purchases, that do not clog it up again but only complement what you already have.
