What To Look For In A Personal Image Consultant
So you are considering a personal image consultant? You have come to the right place. Having worked in this field for over 20 years, I can advise you on what to look out for.
One of the first things you should look for is experience. I do not mean just experience working in a department store or having done a course for a few weeks, but real-life experience with a wide range of people from various backgrounds. You can do all the training in the world, but the in-person experience is where you learn your trade.
Secondly, you should look at how long they have been doing their job. I recommend looking for someone with at least ten years of experience. Throughout that time, they would have worked with lots of different clients and have learnt along the way tips and tricks that work for them. All of that knowledge will benefit you when you work together.
Next, ask them questions. For example;
How long have you been an image consultant?
Where have you worked?
Do you have testimonials?
What budgets have you worked with?
Do you understand colour?
Do you know which styles work best for which body types?
Where did you train?
By asking them some or all of the questions above you will get a good sense of how professional they are.
Unfortunately, there are no rules, and anyone can set themselves as a personal stylist with no training or experience. You will be wasting your money going to someone who may be cheap but inexperienced.
On this note, subscription boxes are not the way forward if you are looking for a stylist. The ‘stylists’ are only trained for a few weeks and are assisted by an algorithm to decide what to send out to you. If you are looking for a surprise outfit each month, then go for it. If you are looking for an image consultant or stylist – AVOID. You can read more here.
Updating Your Image
Updating your wardrobe with an image consultant should not be about you being coaxed into a look or style that does not feel right for you. The consultant should listen to your concerns, tastes, and lifestyle needs to help you create the best wardrobe.
The result should feel comfortable, timeless, and like a second skin, that enhances your personality.
It is not about becoming someone you are not, or limiting your wardrobe to the point that it feels uncomfortable.
There is no one size fits all. Whether you plan to create a capsule wardrobe, update your style due to weight loss/gain, or just need some help finding your happy place again, a stylist with enough experience will gently guide you in a direction that feels comfortable and exciting at the same time.
You do not have to start from scratch (unless that is the outcome you want), nor do you have to do it all in a certain amount of time. Your new wardrobe should save you time, money and space because it is full of intentionally purchased pieces that mix and match easily.
A Colour Analysis
A personal image consultant can also give you a colour analysis which will look at two main areas;
- The base tone and warmth of your skin, hair and eyes. You will either be warm/golden/yellow or cool/ash/ blue
- The depth of colour of your hair, skin and eyes.
Using these two categories will determine how warm or cool your colours should be and how dark or cool you should go. Another area I look at when working with private clients is the depth of colour in hair and eyes against that of the skin. Essentially, if your hair is dark and your skin pale, you can afford to have high contrast in the colours you wear too. If your skin and hair are a similar shade, for example, blonde with pale skin or dark brunette with black skin, you are better with colours of an equal depth of colour. Blondes with pale skin would suit pastels, and brunettes with black skin would suit deeper shades.
A Body Type Styling Session
Another area a personal image consultant can help you with is assisting you to determine which styles of clothes suit your body shape. Alongside a colour analysis, a body shape guide helps you to become very intentional about everything you choose to add to your wardrobe.
With the colour analysis tools and a body shape guide, you are well-equipped to maintain your wardrobe long after you have worked with the personal image consultant.
A body shape guide should identify your body type and clearly outline which styles of each clothing category enhance that body type. For example, an apple shape would best suit midi rise flat fronted wide leg trousers. Apple shapes should avoid skinny jeans.
When I give a guide to clients, it has examples of each category, for example, jackets, trousers, jeans, skirts, and dresses and has clickable links to where they can buy those items or view them in better detail. That way, clients have a clear reference point when out shopping for a garment.
A Personal Image Consultant Results
Why should you book a personal image consultant? If any of the below resonates with you;
- I struggle to decide what to wear in the morning
- I have a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing to wear.
- I struggle with what colours suit me
- I would like to be bolder in choosing colours and styles but do not know where to start
- Since having children, my body shape has changed, and I no longer fit or feel right in my old clothes.
- I am about to retire, so I no longer need my work wardrobe.
- I have lost/gained a lot of weight, and my clothes no longer fit me
- I have decided to embrace the grey/ dye my hair, so colours that previously worked on me no longer do.
Post the consultation; you should be able to shop for clothes confidently and mix and match items easily to create outfits that have you looking and feeling great. Not only that, but you will save money not buying things that do not work for you, time getting dressed in the morning and space in your wardrobe.
