So you want to know how to create a capsule wardrobe when your weight fluctuates. What do you do? Do you keep several different sizes in your closet, or do you remove all but the size you are now? You have come to the right place. I have lots of suggestions for creating a capsule wardrobe that still accommodates weight fluctuations. So let’s get started.
Capsule Wardrobe While Losing Weight
If you want to create a capsule wardrobe while losing weight, it can be tricky to know what to keep and what should go. The same applies if you are gaining weight. There are many reasons why this might be happening; pregnancy, illness, surgery or even a fitness regime can all have a significant impact on what fits and what does not.
First, you need to decide when your capsule is for? Is it for the whole year or just one season? How long has your weight been fluctuating? Is it in your control or not? Next, we will look at all the possibilities and how we can accommodate them into your capsule wardrobe.
Buying Clothes While Losing Weight
If you are actively working on your weight and seeing changes, or your weight is significantly changing; otherwise, it is worth having options in your capsule. Whether your capsule is for one year or just a season, look at the previous period and decide if you are likely to see changes during this time too. If the answer is yes, then keep the target weight options out.
Alternatively, if you think it may take longer to see significant changes, I would put the target options away. Unless you are someone who enjoys seeing the target weight clothes hanging in your wardrobe for inspiration, then they should go. Why? Well, I do not think it is generally good for morale to have clothes in front of you in your target weight if you are struggling to get there.
If you need to buy clothes for your capsule in a particular colour palette you have chosen, try to find styles that will accommodate both sizes. There are always exceptions to this rule, but the styles below can be worn by several different sizes successfully.
Just as a note, I always advise private clients to not remove clothes entirely when they first start building a capsule wardrobe, just put the items away somewhere not so easy to access. That way at the end of the season you can decide if you still need them or not and whether to donate or sell them.
Losing Weight Clothes
Another option to help you lose weight while you create a capsule wardrobe, is to buy clothing you need in your capsule that has the dual purpose of assisting you to lose weight too. There are a few choices on the market that claim to help shift the pounds. If you are looking for sportswear for your capsule, one of these might be a good option. Some of these you could wear under clothes for an extension to a top that has become too short.
Tailoring Clothes After weight Loss
Another option is, if you have an item in your wardrobe which used to fit and is now too big, you can have it tailored. Whenever you want anything tailored, ask around for the best place to go. Take the garment with the shoes you intend to wear it with; this mainly applies to trousers or skirts. The tailor can then work with you to decide how you want the garment to sit. If you wear the piece over another garment, for example, a jacket or coat, again wear something underneath so the tailor can gauge the measurements correctly.
